Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam
The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was founded on 6 May 1994 by Vaiko after he broke away from the DMK. Espousing a more assertive brand of Tamil nationalism, the party peaked in the late 1990s and early 2000s, winning up to 4 of 39 Lok Sabha seats in alliance with the AIADMK and later the DMK. It lost its recognized state-party status around 2010 and its historic "Top" election symbol, contesting subsequent elections including 2024 (won via a Madras High Court order) on the "Matchbox" symbol as a DMK-led alliance partner.
